Ninety-Year-Old Chimneys Deserve Somebody Who Gets Them
The Tudors, capes and colonials of southwest Nassau were built before your grandparents met — and their chimneys have been out in every nor'easter since. We sweep them, repoint them and keep them honest, on a schedule that fits around the LIRR.
One crew, one truck, every skill the stack needs — from the firebox behind your mantel to the crown over your roofline. Nothing subbed out, nobody you haven't met.
Chimney Sweeping & Cleaning
A winter of fires leaves the flue coated and slow. We brush it clean end to end while sealed HEPA suction keeps the living room out of it.
A stain by the mantel usually starts at the roofline. We find where the storm actually got in — flashing, crown or brick — and shut that door for good.
Seven Things an Old Nassau Chimney Does When It's Struggling
A chimney built in 1935 doesn't complain loudly — it drops hints. Catch the hint and the fix stays small; miss it and the winter finishes the argument.
A smoky smell on rainy daysMoisture is waking up the creosote — the flue is overdue for a brushing.
Sand on the stoop under the stackPrewar mortar giving up grain by grain. Repointing time.
White powder blooming on the brickSalts pushed out by trapped moisture — water is inside the masonry.
A water mark that grows each stormFlashing or crown failure, mapped on your ceiling in real time.
A glassy black coat inside the throatGlazed creosote — the dangerous stage. Cold fireplace until it's out.
Gas logs burning tall and orangeCorrect is short and blue — anything else points at the venting.
No one remembers the last sweepOn a chimney this age, that memory gap is reason enough to call.

What Valley Stream Homeowners Ask First
Is the check honestly free?
Honestly free — that's the standing policy. The tech works hearth to cap — firebox, damper, the full flue, crown and brickwork — then explains every finding while he's still at the house. The inspection report is the part that costs money: $149 for the written version with photos, made for closings, insurers and your records, and only ever prepared when you ask.
Our Tudor is from the thirties. What does that mean for the chimney?
It means softer brick, lime-heavy mortar and, very often, a flue that was never lined — built for coal, adapted for oil, converted to gas, and still wearing its original clay. These chimneys respond beautifully to sympathetic repointing and a properly sized stainless liner; they respond badly to hard modern mortar slapped on in a hurry.
The house went oil-to-gas. Why would the chimney care?
Because gas exhaust is cooler and wetter than the oil exhaust the flue was sized for. The exhaust cools before it clears the top, condenses, and the acid in that damp goes to work on clay and mortar. It's the most common hidden problem we find in this zip code, and a stainless liner sized to the new equipment ends it.
Water shows up by the fireplace after storms. Whose problem is it?
Usually the chimney's. Sideways nor'easter rain finds split crowns, worn flashing and porous brick long before it finds a shingle defect. We locate the true entry point, repair exactly that, and treat soft masonry with a repellent that breathes so the wall dries out between blows.
How can I tell if the joints need repointing?
Scratch one with a key — sound mortar shrugs, dead mortar pours. Grit collecting on the stoop, joints sitting back from the brick face, or daylight through a hairline all vote the same way. Caught early it's a tidy one-visit job that buys decades.
Do you carry insurance?
In full — say the word when booking and the certificate reaches your inbox before the appointment. Techs are background checked, and protection goes down inside before anything else happens.
What does the sweeping visit look like from my couch?
Quiet, mostly. Cloths spread, opening sealed, HEPA vacuum humming for about an hour while the brushes work. The soot leaves in the canister, and the only visible change is a fireplace that pulls the way it used to.
We're on a contract deadline — how quickly can this happen?
Give the date to whoever answers (516) 209-2555 and the week rearranges itself. The free check typically lands inside two days, and the $149 inspection report follows within one business day. Hours are Monday to Friday, 7 to 7 — Saturdays and Sundays the shop rests, so budget the calendar accordingly.
